What Are The Types of Car Speakers

Here we will cover the main types of car speakers, but make sure you understand what the best setup is for audio in your car before you start buying anything!

Component Speakers

Component speakers are considered the best for high-quality sound, but they can be expensive. It involves a separate driver that can be mounted apart from the speaker itself and you can set it up in a custom way. This will also involve a crossover network you would need to install separately. This kind of speaker system will sound the best, cost the most, and be the most difficult to install.

Full Range (Coaxial) Speakers

Full range or coaxial speakers are the common speaker type that comes installed in your car. They are simple speakers with a cone in the middle and the driver attached on the back. They have all the elements of the speaker in one place and are therefore the easiest to install. Some can sound good while the unbelievably cheap ones are limited in the sound they can reproduce. These come in many shapes and sizes are widely available.

2 Way Speakers

This kind of speaker has 2 different drivers. One for the woofer which reproduces low tones and one for the tweeter which handles the midrange and treble. These are a good option when you want a bit more clarity than a coaxial speaker but cannot afford a 3-way speaker option.

3 Way Speakers

3 ways have 3 drivers. There is one for the woofer, midrange, and tweeter. These are typically a little bit bigger than 2-way speakers and can sound significantly better. 3 ways are typically more expensive than 2-way speakers because they have more involved in building them.

Midrange

Midrange speakers are part of a component speaker system. They are a single speaker that are used specifically to produce clear midrange sounds. They have a driver mounted somewhere are and are hooked up to a crossover.

Tweeters

Much like midrange, these are part of a component system and will have a driver mounted elsewhere. Tweeters will only produce the most high-end tones that midrange speakers do not. Tweeters will also be connected to a crossover.

Midbass

These are very versatile that can produce some deep lows and midranges that normal coaxial speakers or regular midrange speakers may miss. These are typically 6 inch or 8-inch speakers and are usually part of a full component speaker system. These are not needed for most low to mid-budget simple systems.

Subwoofers

Subs as they are called, are the big boys of speakers. They are usually mounted in their own cabinet and will reproduce the low thumping bass that midrange or low mid speakers will not be able to handle. They will typically have their own amplifier and can be quite expensive if you are picky!
